Singer-songwriter MELANIE
DEMORE has
a remarkable voice, weaving all the fibers of African American
folk with soulful ballads, spirituals and original music.
In her presentations, DeMore beautifully brings her audience
together through her music and commentary.
She has toured
extensively, singing at festivals, universities and concert
halls. Her voice can be heard on numerous recordings including "Share
My Song” and "Come Follow Me.”
In addition
to her solo work, DeMore facilitates vocal workshops for
professional choirs, community groups and for people who
just need to raise their voices. Her Sound Awareness program
has been presented in prisons, schools and youth organizations
throughout the US, Canada and New Zealand.
DeMore was a
California-Artist-in Residence with the Oakland Youth Chorus
as a conductor for 10 years and is currently teaching a
capella singing at St. Paul's School in Oakland, CA. Melanie
has contributed her voice to many progressive causes and
is a long time friend and supporter of MECA. She is a featured
presenter for SpeakOut! The Institute for Social and Cultural
Change and is a founding member of the Grammy-nominated
vocal ensemble, Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage
Choir. Her belief in the power of the voice can be summed
up in a line from her writings:
A SONG CAN KEEP
YOU ON YOUR FEET WHEN THERE
SEEMS TO BE NO GROUND BENEATH
YOU.
