Produced in association with the Asian
Pacific Islander Cultural Center as apart of the 7th United
States of Asian America Festival, the Alleluia Panis Dance
Theater (APDT) performs Sayaw Sa Mutya. In Pilipino Sayaw
translates to dance and Mutya means the ultimate manifestation
of woman. It is believed that the ancient Tagalog
people beseeched the guardian spirit of Laguna de Ba-I (Lake
of the Woman) to create a river to transport the dead to
sea, in order to reach everlasting peace and that river
spirit appears as at the beautiful Mutya, when the moon
is full.
This
evening of performance is shared with Jill Togawa’s
Purple Moon Dance Project. performing, Greater Than the
Sum of Our Parts. This new work is rooted in teachings on
impermanence and cutting through illusion. Sculptural movement
and intimate imagery shape this exploration through the
terrain of transition, loss and attachment. Purple Moon
Dance Project was founded by Jill Togawa to realize the
creative vision of integrating non-western and western dance
forms and aesthetics through multi-disciplinary collaborations;
while consistently exploring the continuum of intimacy for
women. Their mission is to develop a greater appreciation
and visibility for American cultural diversity, especially
for lesbians and women of color, and to contribute healing,
positive social change and peace in our society through
the medium of dance. In addition to performances, Purple
Moon Dance Project also conducts workshops for women and
girls without formal dance training and for community-based
organizations serving lesbians and women of color.
This performance is a production of
the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center ‘s (APICC)
